KNOW YOUR PRODUCT

At Take 2 Markets we get lots of women with “vintage” clothing. Vintage is one of those terms that is so broadly used that the true meaning is almost completely lost. The lovely Nicole Jenkins is the owner of Circa Vintage Clothing in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. What she doesn’t know about vintage isn’t worth knowing. Here are her definitions:

VINTAGE – as defined by Nicole Jenkins from Circa Vintage Clothing
Clothing pre-1920s is antique.
Clothing 1920s-1965 is vintage.
Clothing 1965- 1985 (approx 25 years into the past) is retro.
Clothing from the last 25 years is just second hand, quite common and not particularly interesting (yet - it needs to get older and scarcer).

Nicole’s definition, whilst very accurate is quite restrictive, and many take "vintage" up to the '80s. Nicole finds that the clothing since the mid '60s is quite different in fabric and manufacture from the earlier garments though, so she uses “retro” for these garments.
